Using the theme

To use the theme extract the main downloaded zip file.

After extracting you will find a folder named similar to theme name. That folder is the production ready ( live site ready ) theme.

To set up the theme properly with several setting options, please read through the documentation.

Please edit theme files using a proper code editor. There are lots of free and opensource code editor available. You can choose any of those, some popular free code editor Visual Studio Code , Atom


Installation

WordPress theme can be installed in 2 ways.

  1. Through WordPress admin dashboard.
  2. Uploading via FTP.

Through WordPress

Installing a theme through WordPress is very easy. Login to your WordPress Dashboard and be ready to go. Now you have to follow few steps described below.

  • In WordPress Admin panel's sidebar navigation go to Appearance > Themes. Now click on Add New button at the top.
  • In the main download zip you will find a folder named "daily-news". Make a zip of this folder.
  • Now click on "Upload Theme" and after That click "Choose File" and locate your Theme zip file(daily-news.zip). Then install now.
  • Within few seconds you will see a message "Theme installed successfully."
  • Now click on "Activate".

Your new theme will be installed and activated successfully. Now you will see an notification above the page. It will ask you to install "Meta Box", "GBJ Daily News Companion" plugin. Also the "contact Form 7" plugin is recommend for contact form.
Please install all those plugins. It installs from wordPress.org Plugin Directory and it's free. GBJ Daily News Companion is custom plugin and comes bundled with the theme.

Uploading via FTP

In your themeforest download folder you will find a folder "daily-news" you have to upload this folder in your web host. Follow the instruction below.

  • Connect your webserver via ftp and find the folder wp-content > themes in your WordPress installation. This folder contains all your installed themes.
  • Transfer / upload the "daily-news" folder in that "Themes" folder.
  • After successful upload, login to your WordPress dashboard and go to Appearance > Themes. You will see the Daily News theme listed here.
  • Hover over the theme Thumbnail and click on the "Activate" button. Your new theme will be activated successfully. Now you will see an notification above the page. It will ask you to install "Kirki" and "Meta Box" plugin. Also the "contact Form 7" plugin is recommend for contact form. Please install those plugins. It installs from wordPress.org Plugin Directory and it's free.

You must should install and activate these "Kirki" and "Meta Box" plugin before you write any post or page or anything else. Without this plugin the theme will not work properly.


Home page for this theme

For this theme's custom home page at first you have to create 2 page and make some settings.

Go to Pages > Add New and create a page. Choose "Frontpage" template for this page. This will be the home page.

Create another page with "Default Template". In both pages keep the content blank.

Now go to Settings > Reading in admin sidebar and check these option "Front page display" -> "A static page (select below)". In the dropdown options, for home page choose the page you have just created with "Frontpage" template. For blog page choose that another page which you have created with "Default Template".


Theme option configuration

For simplicity Daily News theme uses WordPress's default customization option and most of the options are self explanatory. Go to Appearance > Customize to see the available customization options.

  1. Site Identity

    In this section you will see Your site title and tagline which you have set up at the time of WordPress installation. If you want to change these you can do that. Also you can add site icon here.

  2. General Settings

    In this section you will find some general settings which will be used in entire site.

    • Site Layout: Choose the site layout between boxed or full width.
    • Sidebar Position: Choose the side bar position either left or right.
  3. Colors

    Here you can change the theme primary color.

    If you want to change the header text color or background color of body area, you can do that in this section.

  4. Header Settings

    • Header General Settings

      Navbar Type: Choose navbar type, normal / fixed at top.

      Header Layout: Two header layout option available with this theme. One is only logo, which is centered aligned. Another is With ad space. in this layout logo will be left aligned. Choose second layout if you want to show ad in the header. The settings for the ad is in "Advertisement Settings" option later.

      Show Navbar Search: enable or disable search option in the main navigation bar.

    • Logo Settings

      Upload Logo: Upload / choose the logo image here.

      Site Tagline: Show or hide site tagline below the logo.

    • Tiker / Slider bar settings

      Here you can Change the settings for the latest post bar which is being shown below the logo area.
      You can change the name text of that bar as well as number of post to be shown and the slide effect.

      By default the latest posts are being showed here in this bar. But also there is another option where you can set is such a way so that only latest posts from a specific category to be shown in latest post slider.
      Choose "Post From a Category" in the "Post Type In Slider" option. Then It will show another option to choose an specific category from all your available categories.

    • Social Icons Settings

      Add your social links for the icons here. Keep the field blank for those icons which you don't want to show.

    • Header Image This option is a WordPress default option and only use it if you want to add an image in the header behind the logo area.

  5. Home Page Settings.

    All the custom home page related options are here.

    • Featured Area Options

      Featured Area Options: Enable / Disable featured area in the home page.

      Featured Section Layout: There is 3 layout option for the featured area. Choose one of theme.

      Featured Post Count: Number of featured post to be shown in the home page featured area.

      Featured Section posts: There are 2 choice in this option. First one is Featured Posts". These options showed posts which are set as featured post when the post was edited. Another option is "Post From A Category". Choose the later one to show posts in that featured area from an specific category. If you choose this then another option will be visible to choose the category from your available category.

    • Category Area Options

      Under this option you can add as many category section as you want. For each section you have each option block ( Set of options ).

      In each set of options you will see the below options.

      Category Section Title: Set a title for that category section.

      Post Category: Choose a category to show post from that specific category in that section.

      Section Layout: Choose one out of 4 layout option for that section.

      Number of Post: Choose the number of posts to be shown in that section.

      At the bottom of these option block you will see a button names as "Add New Row". Clicking this button you can add another section for categorized posts in the home page. For each Option block the set of options are same. Also note that you can reorder the blocks by dragging.

    • Sidebar On Homepage

      Sidebar On Home Page: Show or hide the sidebar on the home page.

  6. Single Posts Settings

    These are some settings for the single post ( full post view ).

    Share Links: Enable or disable share links section.

    Author Info Section: Enable or disable Author Info Section.

    Previous Next Post Section: Show or hide the previous and next post section.

  7. Footer Settings

    Under this option set you will find all the footer related setting options.

    Footer Widget Area: Show Or hide the footer widget area.

    Custom Copyright Text: If you enable this a new text box will be visible. In that box you can add Custom text for copyright area.

    Feed Link: Show or hide the feed link at the footer right corner.

  8. Advertisement Settings

    These are the options for ad area in header and home page bottom area ( above the footer ). If you don't want to show ad then keep the options fields blank.

    • Header Ad Settings

      Header Ad Type: Choose the option ad type between your own image ad or Google Adsence code.

      If you choose "Image ad" Then there will be two text field "Image URL" and "Link URL". Add the full Url of the add image in Image URL field. Add the Link ( where you want to send the user after user click the ad) in Link URL field

      If you choose "Google Adsence code" then the "Image URL" and "Link URL" field will be hidden and a box will be open to add the Google Adsense Code.

    • Front Page Bottom Ad Settings

      This is the same as Header Ad Settings for the ad area at the bottom of home page ( below the category sections ).

  9. Background Image

    If you want to use any texture / image in your site background you can do that in this section. Ones you upload / choose an image for background there will be some more option visible related to background image.

  10. Navigation

    This section is also comes with WordPress by default. In this section you can choose which menu (created in dashboard) will be shown in main menu area.

    It is recommended that to setup menu, you don't need use this section. you can do this from Appearance > Menus. It is the more easy way. Later in this documentation I will write, how to use Menus

  11. Widgets

    This section also generated by WordPress by default. It's a way to quick add / remove / modification of widgets in your site widgetize area. It is the same as Appearance > Widgets option in admin panel left sidebar.

  12. Static Front Page

    Normally You don't need to change anything here. It is same as Home page settings.

  13. Custom Code

    In this section you can quickly add custom CSS code to insert in your site.

    If you want to add lots of css code, I will recommend you yo use a child theme.

    A ready to use child theme for this theme is included in main download. Do not remove any file and code from it. Add your css in the style.css file.


WordPress beginner Instruction

How to Create menu

To setup navigation for your WordPress at first you have to create a menu. To easily create It is recommended that you create your pages at first. No problem if you keep this page blank at this point.

Go to Appearance > Menus now give a name to your menu and add menu item (pages or custom links) to this menu and then save the menu.

Now click on Manage Locations. Here you will see a table with two column "Theme Location" and "Assigned Menu". Choose your recently created menu from the dropdown option for the menu location (In Daily News theme it is called "Main Menu"). Now click on save changes.

How to add widgets in widgetize area

Go to Appearance > Widgets from the admin sidebar menu.

In Daily News theme There is one widgetize area which is "Main Sidebar". This is visible in single post and page.

Just drag available widgets from left side of this page into that widget area. and then insert necessary content and settings and save that widget.


Different post formats

To make a new post go to Posts > Add New from the admin sidebar. This theme support various post formats. Choose which format of post you are going to create. At the right side you can see "format option". You can choose here.

Depending on which format you choose there will be a meta box (options for that specific post format you choose) below the post content box.

This options are pretty much self explanatory. I highly recommend to use these options for different post format. It will ensure that your posts will be rendered in your site correctly.


Featured Post

Instruction to feature a post so that it will appear at the featured area in the home page.

When you edit a post you will see a meta box below the post content box. Within that box you will see a check box option "Check this to feature this post.". Select that box and update the post.


Demo Installation

If you want to install the demo data as the Live demo site of this theme. follow the instruction below

Please note, If you import demo data maybe there will be some un-wanted data and / settings in your site. As well as maybe your previous settings will be removed totally or partially. Be sure, you want to do this.

Go to Tools > Import from your admin sidebar.

Click on WordPress. If you didn't used this option before then a popup will be opened showing "WordPress Importer". Click on "Install Now" button.

After successful installation click on "Activate Plugin & Run Importer".

Now click on "Choose file" button and locate "dailynews.wordpress.demo.data.xml" file. It is located in folder "Demo Data" in your themeforest main download folder. Now click on "Upload file and import" button.

In next step check this option "Download and import file attachments" and click on "submit"

Maybe some error or warning will display but don't worry if you can see a success message then it's fine.

It is recommended that use this demo data import for test / understanding purpose only. Don't use these in your live site.
